5 tips for a festive table

Eating together is all about conviviality. And a festively set table can add just that little bit extra. With these tips, you can create a restaurant experience at home.

1. Start with a color

Whether you have a cupboard full of tableware or just enough plates for a small gathering, a theme color creates cohesion at the table. Incorporate this color into your tableware—from plates to dessert spoons—or into small details like napkins, candles, and place cards. You can adjust the color to suit the dinner party. For example, for a Christmas dinner, go for classic red, gold, or green, or adapt your color theme to the country where the dish originates.

2. Mix old with new

Ask friends, family, or neighbors if you can browse their cupboards. They might have some treasures you can borrow for an evening. With a bit of luck, you’ll also find many beautiful items at the thrift store, from retro tablecloths to candles.

3. Use nature and your creativity

Look outside for treasures for the table. Think pine cones, conifer branches, leaves, wildflowers, and shells. There’s probably plenty to decorate your table with indoors too. Stamp boring napkins, make confetti from old magazines, or fold your own poinsettias.

 4. Create a  difference in height

A table where everything is the same height is boring. Create depth with candlesticks in different sizes, a tiered stand, or a lush bouquet. This will instantly make your table look less stiff. Just make sure the decorations aren’t too high. It would be a shame if you barely see your guests.

 5. Make it personal

A small effort, a big gesture: make place cards for your guests. Write their names on nice paper and place them in the center of the plate. Or punch holes in the cards and tie them to your cutlery or a pine branch.

Have you planned a dinner party yet?

Put the above tips into practice.
